1. Introduction of the Stress Education Center's - Dstress.com Newsletter

Welcome to the January - February, 2002 issue of this monthly e-zine.

We have made it to 2002, now what? The disasters of 2001 have left many of us "shell-shocked" and we await the next "shoe to drop." It is hard to turn off the anxiety response once it has been triggered. Time does seem to allow emotional repair but there are many ways to do this more gracefully and with some sense of control.

The purpose in providing this newsletter is to offer information about stress and possible solutions to managing stress and change. Your input is encouraged. This will be a forum for answering questions/concerns, offering suggestions, motivating you and your clients to develop and practice a strategy of self-care that includes regular stress management.

The goal is to enhance your quality of life, increase your productivity, and offer tested fun strategies that will give you more time and energy.

Please read the newsletter and provide feedback. This feedback will help to shape the form and content for future editions. Thank you in advance for your assistance in the development process.

L. John Mason, Ph.D.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Patricia Galasso and Dennis Lindell are completing their training and working on their project for completion of their certification process in stress management. It was great to meet and to train these consultants from Clear Lake, Iowa. I hope that they will contribute their valuable information to all of you through this newsletter in future issues.

A Special Thank You to my State of California friends in Sacramento for hosting me in December and offering me great feedback.

2. Article:Life is Fragile...Enjoy Each Moment

I felt the pain of mortality today! A good friend of mine called today with some shocking news. Three weeks ago she had a seizure at work. When she woke in the hospital five days later, the doctor told her that she virulent brain tumor. What could I do or say! Professionally I did not know how best to respond. Personally, I was angry, upset, deeply saddened, and emotionally aroused! Yes, even stressed!

We never know why these things happen, but we need to find the important lessons in these tough experiences of life. Every moment is precious and we must participate as fully as we can in being present. We must follow our dreams and offer value everyday.

As my shock diminishes, I will respond as a friend and if I can as a professional to assist my friend. Whether she chooses to fight the disease or picks the path of acceptance, I will offer what support I can. I will learn my own lessons from my involvement as we all must, bearing witness, or personally experiencing these difficult trials.

Pray for my friend Ellen and take this story as a reminder to celebrate every day as if it were your last.

Along the way, do not forget to take good care of yourself!

Good Health!
L. John Mason, Ph.D.

3. Products of the Month: Stress Management for High Blood Pressure, New CD's, Professional Stress Management Training and Certification

Stress Management for High Blood Pressure #203

Recently there has been a great deal of interest in this audio cassette. It is being used to control the anxiety response that people are experiencing. Though it was created for controlling high blood pressure, it works on the same physical systems that are triggered by anxiety and offers relief when practiced on a regular basis. Combined with temperature training (biofeedback) and desensitization (as described in my book, Guide to Stress Reduction) your clients can over come many fears and phobic responses.

This tape is also recommended for migraine headache, many stress related abdominal symptoms, and other circulatory conditions that may be created or made worse by stress.

Now more than ever, spend 20 minutes daily involved in stress management and deep relaxation. Make the time! Use the audio tapes listed on the "Tapes" page of my website or make your own tapes from the exercise written out in the article listed as the "advanced stress management technique" from the "Articles" pages of my website.

NEW!
The Stress Management tape series are being transferred to CD's. This has been requested by many clients in the past year. Currently,
#202 Stress Management for Chronic Pain,
#203 Stress Management for High Blood Pressure, and
#204 Stress Management for Sleep are now available for sale. These CD's will be sold at retail for $15.95 each. Quantity pricing is available. The other 8 tapes are being transferred to CD format presently.

Please take good care of yourself!

Stress Management Certifications for Professionals ... Now Available

Important, but not for everyone!

We have put together a special program to help train and support professionals who wish to offer stress and change management training and consulting. Requests have come from: consultants, trainers, speakers, coaches, therapists, teachers, HR Professionals, Clergy, Nurses, Hospice Trainers, even Dentists for a standardized training that develops knowledge, skills, and offers materials to trainers who want to offer effective professional programs in stress and change management.

The first group will be for counselors who work on North Sea oil rigs. This will be a two day training program in September, taking place in Phoenix, AZ. The formula will be modified for special groups like teachers, dentists, or people working in chronic pain clinics. The process involves a combination of exposure to information, demonstrations of techniques, personal experience, and demonstration of presentation skills.

Promotion for this training and certification will be first be directed toward Human Resource Professionals. Most of the trainings will be conducted over the telephone in "tele-class" format. This will save time and money in traveling for this training.

More information and a list of specific techniques and tools to be covered will be available in the near future. If you are interested in this certification process, please contact Dr. John Mason through return e-mail or by telephone at (707) 795-2228.

4. Stress Management Tip of the Month: Now needed more than ever before!

With the Holidaze upon us, make time to connect or re-connect with your friends and family. We require special support from caring, friendly people and we have to make time for these activities. Companies, organizations, places of worship, social groups, schools, and governmental should consider offering additional opportunities for people to connect and to offer care and support to all participants. This is not the time to emotionally "circle the wagons" and the deal with our grief, fear, sadness, and anger, alone!

Go out of your way to reach out top others. Offer personal and sincere compliments and offers of support. You will feel better, because you are doing something positive. You may also be saving a life.

Do not forget your own self-care. Reduce your personal expectations regarding your performance for the sake of your emotional and spiritual well-being. But do not withdraw from your life and your friends.

Remember to breathe! Distractions will surface, but gently return your mind's focus to the process of slowly breathing.... inhale then exhale. It does require practice and some discipline, but this will work for you.

Try this.

Try this. It can really work well for you.

We have Self Guided exercises, taken directly from the Bestseller, Guide to Stress Reduction available to you in various formats.
